The team made some lifelong fans when they visited the primary school on Friday morning, who have wholeheartedly thrown their support behind the New Zealand side.
Eleven-year-old Justin Dale says he is delighted the team could come and visit him and his friends at school, with the news they’d be attending helping aid a quick recovery from the ailment that kept him home from school on Thursday.
“Yesterday when my dad told me that Team Wellington was coming to school and that we’d get to play some football with them I was so happy,” the youngster enthuses.
The team’s visit to Samabula Primary School was an opportunity to give back to the community that has made Team Wellington’s stay in Fiji so enjoyable.
Team media manager Zen Yates-Fill told the group it was very exciting to be visiting the school, running some football drills and getting to share a combined love of football with the students.
“We hope you will enjoy yourselves, and that we will see some of you at the grounds on Sunday,” he told the gathered group.
For Dale the drills were a fun way to get some further insight into the game.
“They’ve been teaching us running and techniques for kicking the ball and different tactics,”
he says.
Like many of his classmates, the experience has given Dale a renewed love for the game and he’ll definitely be in the stands cheering on the lads from New Zealand’s capital come Sunday.
The 2015 Fiji Airways OFC Champions League final between Auckland City FC and Team Wellington is being held at ANZ Stadium in Suva, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm.
