One name that you won’t have heard mentioned though, is that of Chris Wasasala.
The 20-year-old is making his international debut at the XV Pacific Games in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea this week and just two games into things is already making quite an impression.
The Labasa-native was the author of nine of Fiji’s 38 goals against Federated States of Micronesia proving he’s a ruthless target-man just like his idol, fellow Fijian international Roy Krishna.
“He’s my favourite footballer and it was an hour to play and train with him recently when Fiji played the Wellington Phoenix,” Wasasala says.
“We’re both from Labasa and what he has achieved is an inspiration. One day maybe I can be playing professional football somewhere too.”
Wasasala says scoring the first goal for his country was special, and to add eight more was a wonderful feeling.
“Of course it’s always good to score goals as that is what we are out there on the field for. But it was the team and not just me.”
Wasasala and Fiji will continue their campaign towards Olympic and Pacific Games semi-final qualification against Tahiti at 2pm on Bisini Field 3 this afternoon (Tuesday 7 July).
