US$200,000 Humanitarian Fund for the people of Vanuatu
Following a special request from the OFC President David Chung to the football community assembled in Zurich this week, FIFA will make a generous US$200,000 contribution to the recovery effort in Vanuatu in the wake of the devastating Tropical Cyclone Pam.
Chung says, “this first grant is needed immediately to support the humanitarian effort to provide food, water and shelter to victims of the cyclone across the country.
“It will also assist in the resettlement of the families of Vanuatu Football Federation staff who have been left homeless and are currently using the football academy as a temporary shelter.
“We will then assess further how FIFA can assist with a further grant to rebuild the football infrastructure destroyed by Cyclone Pam.”
FIFA Development Committee to provide further funding
FIFA Goal Projects worth US$600,000 each were approved for New Zealand to build a national technical centre and for the merchandising programme and medical centre in Tahiti.
In addition, Tahiti, American Samoa, Tonga, Samoa and Fiji will benefit from FIFA’s Win-Win Programme of a grant for further Income Generation Projects, while Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea will have access to a special fund under FIFA’s Challenger Programme for football infrastructure.
OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas, who is a member of the FIFA Development Committee, says, “these new investments to OFC Member Associations are part of the US$900 million FIFA will spend on development in 2015-2018”.
The committee also confirmed that all Member Associations in OFC will also benefit from:
• Goal Project funding increases from US$500,000 to US$600,000
• Doubling of women’s football development funds
• Support for new and existing national youth competitions
• Financial support for Member Association’s qualification for FIFA U-17 tournaments
• Strengthening IT systems and FIFA Performance grants to improve Management and Governance.
