New Zealand-based Osea Vakatalesau has joined the Fiji under-23 Olympic squad which leaves for Australia on Sunday for a four-match tour.

The former Ba marksman’s return will be welcome news for Juan Carlos Buzzetti and his side who suffered a major setback in their preparation for the OFC Men’s Olympic Qualifier’s
when two weeks ago seven players were suspended from national team action when they broke camp.

Vakatalesau, who plies his trade with Youngheart Manawatu in the NZFC, is likely to lead the frontline for Fiji in their opening game of the Oceania playoffs against New Zealand
on March 1.

Vakatalesau has had a rough start to life in the NZFC under coach Shane Rufer’s tutelage, failing to find the back of the net from seven games with the side, but will add some
much needed firepower and experience to the Fijian attack.

National team chairman Rajesh Patel, who is the only authorized person to speak to the media about the side, said the inclusion of Vakatalesau was a big relief for the
side.

“He boosts the strike force,” Patel said. “With his experience we should have a very good tour.”

Fiji will play the Brisbane Olympians, Brisbane Strikers, a Gold Coast select side and Palm Beach on their tour of Australia.

“While we had wanted to play matches in Asia, this was not possible so this was the next best option,” said Patel.

“These matches should serve as a good build up for the side which will include 23 players, three coaches and a physiotherapist.”

The touring players will be named today.

Patel said ever since the camp breaking incident, the morale within the team had stepped up a level.

“The bonding has gone up another level and all players in the team are determined to do well in the playoffs, Patel said.

“The players are determined and we know that these players are up for the challenge.”
